Telefonica and MegaFon on Thursday extended a strategic partnership covering network kit procurement, international wholesale, and enterprise services.

The renewal of their partnership will see the companies expand their relationship to include fixed and mobile services for Russian clients with activities outside Russia.

"Extending our strategic partnership with this leading international telecommunications firm fully fits in with MegaFon’s business strategy. Implementing projects together with Telefonica is allowing MegaFon to have access to the experience of a large intern ational operator and allow it to continue to expand its base of large international clients in Russia," said Alexander Sobolev, chief strategy officer, MegaFon, in a statement.

The two telcos initially agreed to collaborate in 2013, sharing ideas and best practices in several areas including marketing and channel approaches, and emerging technologies such as network functions virtualisation (NFV).

"We believe this type of relationship is crucial for the transformation of telcos in the new industry scenario," said Mario Martin, Telefonica’s director of industrial alliances. "We are confident the benefits we are both accruing will be further expanded in the next stage of the collaboration, contributing to both growth and efficiency."
