Spanish telco to add Mediapro’s BeIN Sports pay TV channel to its Movistar TV service.

Telefonica has brokered a €2.4 billion deal to acquire top-flight domestic football rights from production company Mediapro.

The deal gives Telefonica the rights to broadcast games from the top two Spanish football leagues and the Copa del Rey cup competition for three seasons starting in 2016-2017.

It also covers broadcast rights for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League for the second half of this season – that is, from 12 January onwards – and for the next two seasons.

Telefonica said it will add Mediapro’s BeIN Sports pay TV channel to its Movistar television offering.

The announcement comes after Telefonica and Mediapro in December picked up the rights to the top two leagues and the domestic cup for three seasons at a total cost of €2.65 billion.

Mediapro acquired the bulk of the available content lots at a cost of €1.9 billion, while Telefonica’s DTS Distribuidora de Television Digital spent €750 million.
