Phicomm’s C630 device will launch in Latin America in Q2 this year.
Telefonica and China Unicom on Tuesday shared the latest development in their global procurement partnership, announcing that the Spanish telco will introduce a new Chinese smartphone to various markets in Latin America later this year.
The telcos have worked together on various strategic projects for a number of years, adding smartphone procurement into the mix last year. The collaboration enables China Unicom to introduce its smartphone partners to the global market via Telefonica’s broader footprint.
The latest device to feature is the C630, a Qualcomm-powered LTE smartphone from Shanghai-based Phicomm. It will be launched in "key Telefonica markets" in the Latin American region from the second quarter of 2016.
The companies did not specify which markets.
The phone forms part of Telefonica’s quest to make more affordable smartphones available to its customers.
Previous devices brought to market under the partnership include low-cost smartphones from Lenovo and TCL.
The telcos said they will continue to expand their collaboration in future joint procurement initiatives and cooperation in other areas.
