Operator to offer music video platform, mobile TV app to LatAm customers from October.
Telefonica this week struck a partnership with Vivendi that will see it offer premium content to mobile customers.
The agreement covers Vivendi’s music video streaming service, WatchMusic, and Studio+, a new service that has been developed to offer exclusive content created specifically for viewing on mobile devices.
WatchMusic and Studio+ will be made available initially to customers in Brazil, followed by other markets in Latin America, from early October. A spokesman for Telefonica revealed that European markets will follow in 2017.
"We’ve seen a mobile-first mindset that confirms the smartphone is the most favoured way to access Internet experiences for most of our millions of mobile customers worldwide," said Michael Duncan, CEO of Telefonica’s consumer unit, in a statement on Wednesday. "Both WatchMusic and Studio+ meet the needs and expectations of today’s digital consumer."
WatchMusic offers unlimited access to music videos, concerts and festivals, as well as live streaming of events. Details about Studio+ content are due to be revealed in the coming weeks.
"We are very happy and proud that Telefonica has chosen to be the first telecom partner to launch the new Studio+ and WatchMusic services designed by the Vivendi development teams across Latin America," said Dominique Delport, chairman of Vivendi Content. "We hope with this worldwide premiere to provide an immersive and addictive experience that we intend to roll out globally in the next months."
Customers will be able to sign up for a free week or month-long trial of the services, which come with the option of cancelling within that time to stop it from rolling over into the next billing cycle.
Telefonica said prices and content catalogues for each country will be unveiled in due course.
