Telco says it will continue to work with Chinese vendor on implementation of NFV technologies.

Telefonica and vendor partner ZTE on Monday announced that the former is operating a commercial voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) network in Peru.

The VoLTE offering is based on the IMS core infrastructure Telefonica implemented in conjunction with ZTE four years ago, the Chinese vendor explained. It is the first IMS VoLTE network to be rolled out in Peru, it added.

The pair have been working on the VoLTE element since August last year, which amongst other things saw ZTE build a new VoLTE session border controller (SBC).

"Telefónica del Perú has been and will be quite active on the evolution of its network to provide more profitable and competitive services for our users while reducing our TCO [total cost of ownership], the telco’s CTO Pedro Planas said.

He noted that the whole project, including the modernisation of the telco’s fixed and mobile infrastructure, was implemented quickly and smoothly.

"The new challenge for Telefónica del Perú is the evolution of the network toward virtualisation technologies," Planas said. "We are very pleased to continue our collaboration with ZTE, a Telefónica reference partner in NFV technologies."

ZTE added that its Cloud UniCore solution, which uses NFV and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies to facilitate the virtualised operation of IMS core network infrastructure, has been used in 50 proof of concept (PoC) and commercial deployments worldwide, with a number of big name telcos, including the Telefonica group.
