Telenor on Thursday announced that its mobile subscribers across the world number more than 200 million.
The Norwegian incumbent has operations in 13 markets in Europe and Asia, adding its most recent, Myanmar, in 2014.
It reached the 100 million mark around five years ago and has added over 170 million customers in the past decade.
"Telenor’s early explorers of the 1990s aspired to bring the benefits of mobile communications to everyone, but they could hardly have imagined the impact we witness now," said Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke.
Telenor entered Hungary, its first market outside Norway, in 1994 and set up its first Asian operation Bangladesh in 1996. It now operates in six Asian markets, which together account for more than half of group revenue.
"Today, our vision goes beyond putting a phone in every hand," Brekke said. "We envision an Internet for all, and with it all the opportunities that a digital life brings."
As it stands, 37% of those 200 million customers are active data users.
