Telco offers free 4G Internet for a limited time in major cities, pledges speedy rollout to other locations.

Telenor has launched 4G services in select areas of major cities in Pakistan.

The Norwegian telecoms operator said it has made services available in parts of Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Multan, Peshawar and Swat.

As it stands, 4G Internet usage is free to all users, Telenor Pakistan said. This is a limited time offer, although it did not disclose when it expects to bring it to an end. Its parent company simply said that "exciting 4G offers are planned for customers with announcements coming in the near future."

The operator is encouraging users with 4G-compatible smartphones to acquire a 4G SIM at one of its sales or service centres. It pointed out that users will require handsets that can run on 4G in the 850 MHz band, which it said "are legally imported in Pakistan."

"For Telenor Pakistan, this represents a huge leap forward towards realising our ambition of bringing Internet for all and empowering Pakistan with digital technology," the operator said.

It has committed to a "speedy rollout" of 4G in other cities.
