Telenor has announced that Morten Sørby, the former CEO of its Indian unit, will become the head of its Asia business from 17 August.
Sørby will take over from Telenor’s current Asia chief, Sigve Brekke, who was recently named successor to group CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas and will take on his new role on the same date.
"Morten brings his vast experience from the global mobile industry to the role as head of our operations in Asia," said Baksaas, in a statement on Monday. "Morten will continue our growth story in this dynamic region and I am confident that he will put his deep industry insight into action together with our operations in Asia."
Sørby joined Telenor in 1993 and has held a number of high-ranking positions within the company. He was appointed CEO of Uninor in January 2014 but stepped down in November that same year due to illness in his immediate family.
Telenor has operations in six Asian markets: Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
At the end of the first quarter of 2015, it served 173.6 million customers there. Its single-largest market is Bangladesh, where Telenor’s Grameenphone unit serves 52 million subscribers. In 2014, Telenor’s Asian operations generated revenues of 50.1 billion kroner (€6 billion).
