The Internet of Things needs its own backbone because ‘things are about to get real’, according to Telia Carrier’s chief exec.

Telia Carrier on Tursday announced it has inked a deal that will see it provide backhaul and interconnection for Ericsson’s connectivity management platform via a dedicated Internet of Things (IoT) backbone.

The deal enables operators in the IoT space to connect directly to Ericsson’s Device Connection Platform from any of Telia Carrier’s 220 IPX points of presence, the Sweden-based wholesale operator said.

"It’s pretty clear that [the] IoT needs its own backbone," said Brendan Ives, CEO of Telia Carrier, in a statement.

"It’s one thing to connect the Internet of Things today, but if you consider we will soon be connecting smart cities and the cars that drive us, things are about to get real," Ives said.

The operator pointed out that backhaul between IoT operators and device management platforms needs to be reliable and requires a high level of security, a statement that was backed up by its latest customer, Ericsson.

"Our operator customers can now connect directly to our Device Connection Platform with a pre-integrated, scalable and secure backbone solution," said Anders Olin, VP of network functions with Ericsson’s cloud and IP business unit.

"The combined offering from Telia Carrier and Ericsson is fully aligned to provide the SLAs demanded by business-critical IoT applications," he said.

To hear more from Telia Carrier about the role network operators can play in the IoT space, head to Carriers World in London on 21 September, where Matthew Jones, the operator’s head of mobile data will join a panel session on the subject.
