Telco partners with Ericsson to work on use cases for the next generation of mobile technology.

TeliaSonera is working with Ericsson to provide 5G mobile services in two key markets as early as 2018.

The companies on Friday announced they are working together to develop use cases for 5G, both on the Internet of Things (IoT) side and in person-to-person communications, with a view to enabling TeliaSonera’s customers in Stockholm and Tallinn to experience services in the next couple of years.

They did not provide further details of the extent of their 5G rollout plans in what will presumably be two testbed markets for the technology.

"Stockholm and Tallinn are two of the most connected cities in the world and now we’ll take them to the next level," said TeliaSonera chief executive Johan Dennelind.

"5G will create completely new innovations, ecosystems and great services to our customers," Dennelind said. "5G will also take connected things (IoT) to a new level."

Meanwhile, Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg pointed out that more and more industries are tapping into the value of connectivity and digitalisation.

"5G will amplify that as it is designed to be the industrial Internet. It will not only be built for consumers, but also for digitalisation of industries and the Internet of Things," he said.

"Together with TeliaSonera we launched the first commercial 4G network in 2009, we will be in the forefront of 5G as well," Vestberg added.

The firms highlighted e-health and connected cars as key areas for 5G applications. The next generation of mobile technology will also bring better network performance in terms of capacity, coverage and power consumption, they said.
