Nordic operator becomes Telia Company; renames international carrier and finance businesses accordingly.
Nordic telecoms operator TeliaSonera has launched its new brand identity, shedding the Finnish half of its name.
The telco revealed last month that it was considering becoming Telia Company. Last week the proposal was approved at its annual general meeting and the firm has now rolled out its new identity across its Website.
In addition to changing its group moniker, the operator has also renamed certain key business units. TeliaSonera International Carrier has become simply Telia Carrier, while TeliaSonera Finance is now Telia Finance.
The name change reflects a new chapter in the telco’s strategy, Telia Company explained. Its aim is to be a new generation, digital operator.
"We don’t want to be something different – we want to be something more," said TeliaCompany CEO Johan Dennelind. "Our new name together with our new graphic design signifies and visualises this."
Telia Company is one of a growing number of major telecoms operators to have rebranded in recent years in a bid to shake off a legacy voice telephony services image and refocus on digital services such as TV, content and the Internet of Things (IoT).
In Telia’s case though, that abandoned legacy includes its roots as an amalgamation of the national telecoms operators of Sweden and Finland.
Sweden’s Telia merged with Finland’s Sonera in 2002 to create TeliaSonera.
The firm still uses the Sonera brand for its domestic operations in Finland – as it does with the Telia name in Sweden – but the group level rebrand signals the end of the road for Sonera on the global stage.
