Companies aim to develop services and applications alongside the new generation of network technology that will underpin them.

TIM on Monday revealed that it is partnering with Ericsson on a project centred around 5G research and development.

The 5G for Italy programme will see the two companies work together to drive research into the next generation of mobile technology, bringing industry, the public sector, universities and research centres, and other potential stakeholders into the mix.

The various parties will develop and test new services that will be enabled by 5G mobile technology, particularly in the Internet of Things (IoT) space.

The programme has already identified a number of areas for pilot projects in areas including the tracking of goods, the management of automated production processes, connected car services and health monitoring.

"This programme allows us to develop the new network simultaneously to those services and applications that in the near future will be enabled by 5G for the digital transformation needs of Italian companies and the development of a new multi-media communication for the consumers," said Mario di Mauro, head of strategy and innovation at TIM.

Meanwhile, Ericsson’s head of region Mediterranean Nunzio Mirtillo said the partnership underlines the role Italy will play in the development of 5G.

"The two companies will work together with industries to understand their specific network requirements in order to realise the full benefits of 5G technologies," Mirtillo said.

"TIM and Ericsson, by extending the programme to key partners, will be able to test and give priority to those services and features that will become part of 5G networks in the near future, essential to accelerate [the] country’s digitalisation, also generating benefits for citizens, businesses and society," he added.
