The Tunisian government will award licences for 4G services next summer, it emerged recently.

The country will begin the process this month, with operators getting their hands on concessions next year, the Minister of Communication Technologies and Digital Economy, Noomen Fehri announced last week, according to Tunis Afrique Presse.

The minister emphasised that the government is pushing for a wide rollout of 4G services, including in areas that may not be particularly profitable for operators. The state is keen to ensure all regions of the country have equal access to 4G in order to promote their development, the report said.

Fehri also pointed out that Internet services in Tunisia are still "poor and expensive," but that 4G should go some way to rectifying that.

Tunisia is home to three mobile operators: incumbent Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange.
