U.S. telco provides performance guidelines in order to drive next-gen mobile tech development.
Verizon this week completed its 5G radio specification, which it says will inform the development of the next-generation of mobile technology.
The U.S.telco said the specification was drawn up by its 5G Technical Forum, a working group that as well as itself includes Cisco, Ericsson, Intel, LG, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung. The specification will help companies test and validate components that could one day become important parts of a standardised 5G network.
"The level of collaboration that we are seeing exceeds what we saw during 4G," said Adam Koeppe, vice president of network technology planning at Verizon, in a statement on Monday. "This agile way of developing the specification and working with the ecosystem will enable us to get to market rapidly."
He said completing the 5G radio specification "is a key milestone toward the development of a complete 5G specification."
Verizon is currently trialling potential 5G technology in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Texas, investigating the performance of carriers several hundred MHz in size, multiple antenna array processing, and new carrier aggregation capabilities.
The telco has also been testing the feasibility of using millimetre wave (mmWave) technology for 5G, looking at its propagation characteristics under various real-world conditions.
"Verizon continues to drive the 5G ecosystem toward rapid commercial deployment," Verizon said.
