Operator to upgrade back office systems across its entire footprint in bid to improve agility, lower costs.

Vimpelcom on Monday awarded Ericsson a US$1 billion (€887.31 billion) contract to completely overhaul its IT infrastructure.

The project spans Vimpelcom’s operations in 11 countries, and will see the telco upgrade its business support systems (BSS) to a digital stack in a bid to accelerate product and service development. Vimpelcom will also deploy real-time analytics in order to offer personalised services to end users. The project is expected to generate significant opex savings too.

"The new digital stack will help us better respond to our customers while also centralising and simplifying our business, creating lean and agile operations that will result in a more efficient cost structure across our global footprint," said Jean-Yves Charlier, CEO of Vimpelcom, in a statement.

Vimpelcom said the transformation project will accelerate its strategy with regard to mobile entertainment, IoT, and financial services, in addition to communications.

"In a fully connected world, success for operators requires performance, flexibility, and efficiency," said Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg. "Ericsson’s unique BSS as a service concept, combined with our leading services and technology capabilities, will support Vimpelcom in realising these ambitions while positioning the company for further growth as ICT transforms industries everywhere."
