Telco is awarded national single licence in Argentina, but plans to launch services as an MVNO.

Virgin Mobile has been granted a licence to operate telecoms services in Argentina, a move that looks set to make the country its fifth market in the Latin American region.

The operator, which provides mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services in 12 markets worldwide and recently announced the launch of its fourth LatAm MVNO in Peru, confirmed the licence award to Total Telecom on Thursday.

The firm has little more information to share at this stage with regard to a host network in the market or a possible launch date, but confirmed that its Virgin Mobile Latin America business unit has secured a licence in Argentina.

The news was also published by the Argentine government in its Boletin Oficial earlier this week.

Virgin Mobile has been awarded a national single licence, known locally as a Licencia Única Argentina Digital, a permit that technically enables it to offer any type of telecom service in the country, be it fixed or mobile, national or international, and irrespective of whether or not it owns its own infrastructure.

In its licence application Virgin Mobile requested permission to operate as an MVNO, therefore a network deal with an existing player will be in the pipeline.
