Telco to overhaul energy company’s U.K. communications, IT infrastructure.

Vodafone on Wednesday won a multi-million pound contract to transform EDF Energy’s communications and IT infrastructure.

EDF Energy is the U.K. arm of French utility EDF. Its 10-year deal with Vodafone covers nine of its offices, three data centres, and 11 power stations.

"We were looking for a partner to help us with a double challenge – upgrading our network while at the same time bringing greater transparency, control and stability to the investment needed to maintain the network," said Nigel Pettifer, head of infrastructure and IT operations at EDF Energy, in a statement.

Vodafone said the new network will offer four times more bandwidth than the current one, enabling EDF to use the latest and greatest in video conferencing and collaborative working services. WiFi will also be rolled out across EDF’s facilities to improve mobile working.

The objectives for EDF include improving training systems, supporting regulatory compliance and enabling flexible working.

"This long term agreement meets our objectives and helps to create a partnership that will minimise risk and maintain innovation," Pettifer said.
