Customers able to carry out contactless transactions in 400,000 outlets.

Vodafone UK this week announced that its m-payment service now supports PayPal.

It means PayPal users can link their account to Vodafone Pay, and make contactless purchases of up to £30 in 400,000 locations. PayPal can also be used on London’s transport network, and national rail services in and around London that accept contactless payments.

If the customer doesn’t have a PayPal account, they can use Vodafone Pay to sign up for one.

"Our customers told us that being able to use PayPal when making mobile payments was important to them so we’re delighted to now offer this on Vodafone Pay. The service also works with any Visa and MasterCard credit or debit card, offering customers greater choice than any other mobile payment service," said Kate Wright, head of consumer services at Vodafone UK, in a statement on Monday.

Vodafone’s m-payment service is based on its NFC-enabled SIM, which works in tandem with its Vodafone Wallet app. Because the contactless connection is established between the SIM card and the payment terminal, Vodafone Pay transactions can be carried out even when the handset is powered down.

"Money is going digital, and the smartphone is at the centre of this transformation," said Rob Harper, director of mobile commerce at PayPal UK.

"Mobile payments have long been at the heart of what we do," he said. "As mobile technology continues to evolve, we will continue to look at new ways to make it easier and faster for our customers to pay."
