Xiaomi on Thursday announced it has set a new record for handset sales, offloading more than 2 million units in less than a day.

The sales were driven by a 12-hour event held by the company for its fans. The Mi Fan Festival, which coincided with the firm’s fifth anniversary, brought in 2.08 billion yuan (€314 million) in revenues. Xiaomi sold 2.12 mi llion phones through the event, as well as selling smart devices, TVs and other gadgets.

As well as breaking company records, those figures enabled Xiamoi to secure a Guinness World Record for the most phones sold in a 24-hour period via a single online platform; Xiaomi managed 2.11 million.

"Isn’t that insane?" the company said, on Twitter.

One of the markets covered by the Mi Fan Festival was India, where Xiaomi recently moved to make its devices more accessible. Earlier this week the company’s India head Manu Kumar Jain announced new partnerships with online retailers Snapdeal and Amazon India, as well as with retail chain The Mobile Store.

In January Xiaomi CEO Jun Lei revealed that the company sold 61.12 million smartphones in 2014, an increase of 227% on the previous year, and indicated that further international expansion is on the cards for 2015.
