Zain Jordan late last week launched the country’s first LTE network and announced further investment in the technology through to 2017.
The network consists of 1,000 base stations that provide coverage to all 12 of Jordan’s administrative regions, known as governorates. It is capable of achieving a theoretical peak connection speed of 150 Mbps.
"Zain’s 4G LTE service is a quantum leap in the daily lives of Jordanians, as it provides advanced solutions and enriches the experience of businesses and consumers alike," said Zain Jordan CEO Ahmad Hanandeh, in a statement on Sunday.
"The technology caters to the growing demand for Internet services in several segments, and its availability will lead to a positive impact on economic activity given the ability users will have to do things more efficiently," he said.
Zain acquired Jordan’s first LTE spectrum licence in April 2014, paying 142 million dinars (US$200 million). Last year it spent a further JOD200 million on LTE technology, and on Sunday it pledged to invest anoth er JOD100 million through to 2017.
"As the leading operator in the Kingdom, we are committed to offering the Jordanian community life-enriching mobile services and playing a key role in the economic and social development of the country," said Scott Gegenheimer, CEO of Zain Group.
Zain has not yet disclosed how much it will charge for access to its LTE network, but information on its Website suggests it will offer both postpaid and prepaid price plans. In terms of device types, the operator listed smartphones, mobile WiFi routers, dongles and customer premise equipment (CPE).
