BT Infinity 1 now offers up to 52 Mbps, faster than equivalent tariffs from Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin.

BT on Friday upgraded the speed of its entry-level fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband service to 52 Mbps from 38 Mbps.

The U.K. incumbent claims that it is faster than the equivalent price plans from rivals Sky and TalkTalk, which offer 38 Mbps, and even cableco Virgin Media, which offers a starting connection speed of 50 Mbps.

"The new, faster BT Infinity 1 service is about giving consumers a premium broadband experience as standard, allowing them to enjoy all the digital world has to offer," said David McDonald, director of broadband, TV and sport bundles at BT Consumer, in a statement.

New customers signing up to a 12-month BT Infinity 1 contract will pay £10 per month, plus £18 per month line rental and a £49 activation fee.

By comparison, BT’s top-of-the-range broadband package offers speeds of up to 76 Mbps and costs £30 per month plus £18 monthly line rental.
