Cell C has attracted interest from half a dozen would-be new owners, but its current parent says it has not yet made the decision to sell.

Oger Telecom says six companies have approached it with regard to its 75% stake in the South African mobile operator, according to a report in Business Day.

The list includes domestic and international players, the paper quoted the telco’s deputy CEO Mazen Abou Chakra as saying.

"No decision has been taken. We are very happy with the good performance of Cell C over the past 12 to 18 months and we remain fully committed to the business until a decision to sell our stake is taken," Abou Chakra said, in the report.

He declined to share further details on the subject.

Business Day noted that South African incumben t Telkom has been named as a likely buyer for the mobile operator, particularly given the recent collapse of its proposed mobile network partnership with MTN.

The South African mobile market is dominated by Vodacom and MTN. Cell C comes in third, while Telkom is the market minnow by some margin, claiming a share of just a couple of percent.
