Chinese operator appoints interim leader and former COO as its new chief executive.

China Telecom on Monday announced the appointment of Yang Jie as its new chairman and CEO, effective immediately.

Yang has left his position as company president and chief operating officer in order to take on his new role, the Chinese operator said. He has been serving as chairman and chief executive in an interim capacity since the resignation of his predecessor late last year.

Former CEO Chang Xiaobing stepped down in the wake of a corruption investigation by Chinese authorities.

Yang’s tenure in the top job will run until China Telecom’s 2016 annual general meeting, which will be held on an unspecified date in 2017, the telco said.

It has appointed Yang Xiaowei, an executive director of the company, as president and COO, also effective immediately.

Both men are in their early 50s and have extensive experience in the telecoms sector in China.
