Network operator building out multi-terabit backbone, next-gen packet networks to provide future-proof connectivity to businesses.

Colt on Thursday committed to a system-wide network upgrade that will enable it to offer 100-Gbps services to businesses.

The network operator said it is undertaking the overhaul in order to satisfy the growing demand among enterprises for reliable, high-speed connectivity to cloud-hosted data and applications.

"Old business models are breaking down and technology is taking a major leap forward, driven by software and virtualisation. Colt is investing heavily in its core strength, the network, to stay ahead of the business transformation curve – just as our customers expect," said Carl Grivner, CEO of Colt, in a statement.

Colt said it is building out a mult-terabit optical backbone and next-generation packet networks that can offer bandwidth up to 100 Gbps.

"Colt’s network investment is centred around creating a scalable and flexible platform that provides customers with choices that meet the varying service requirements of different applications. This platform will further enable our award-winning product portfolio including innovative, software defined networking (SDN) products and Ethernet services, to provide value to our customers as they transition to this agile, cloud-centric world," said Colt’s CTO, Rajiv Datta.

Thursday’s announcement comes after Colt in September revealed it is undertaking a sweeping transformation, strengthening its focus on enterprise connectivity.

The company also made three senior appointments: Tom Regent joined from BT Global Services to become Colt’s chief commercial officer; former Verizon executive Paula Coogan became Colt’s vice president of enterprise and partner sales in Europe; and Level 3’s Tim Passingham was named as vice president of wholesale sales in Europe.
