Telco’s Panama unit conducts two-month trial of copper network extension technology.

Cable & Wireless Communications and Huawei on Thursday announced they have carried out what they claim is the first successful trial of G.fast technology in Latin America.

Mobile and broadband services provider Cable & Wireless Panama deployed G.fast technology on its copper network. It ran the trial for two months and generated average speeds of 500 Mbps in the downlink and upload speeds of 150 Mbps.

"We are thrilled to announce that Cable & Wireless Panama was the first market across Latin America to have successfully completed testing of the G.fast technology," said Carlo Alloni, EVP of technology and group CTIO at Cable & Wireless Communications.

"Our strategic partnership with Huawei has strengthened our commitment to consider solutions that deliver high-speeds," he said.

C&W Panama did not comment on any plans for commercial launch.

The telco is a full service operator, offering fixed-line telephony, broadband, TV services and mobile. It has broadband plans based on both fibre infrastructure and copper network DSL.

"G.fast is the right way to extend the existing fixed line infrastructure to the gigabit access era by accelerating a future oriented ultra-broadband solution with unparalleled user experiences," said Stephen Ma, CEO of Huawei for the Caribbean.
