German incumbent aims to take on U.S. providers with Open Telekom Cloud offering.
Deutsche Telekom on Monday announced the launch of its much-vaunted public cloud service, Open Telekom Cloud.
It is geared towards companies of any size that are looking for a cloud offering that is accessible via the public Internet.
Open Telekom Cloud is based on T-Systems’ network and data centre assets, with hardware from China’s Huawei.
"Thanks to the Open Telekom Cloud, Deutsche Telekom is entering a market segment that up to now has been dominated by its U.S. competitors," the German incumbent said, in a statement.
The new offering will give Deutsche Telekom a tool with which it can compete with the likes of Google, Amazon and others.
"More and more customers are discovering the advantages of the public cloud. But they want a European alternative," said Anette Bronder, director of T-Systems’ digital division. "With the Open Telekom Cloud we are now offering customers the right platform and solution. It is simple, secure and affordable."
Deutsche Telekom has highlighted the fact that T-Systems’ German cloud data centres will provide the quality and security business customers need, using analyst comments to back up its stance.
"Access to a scalable, inexpensive public cloud provided by a German service provider from a German data centre under German law will be very attractive to many customers in Germany," said Andreas Zilch, an analyst at PAC. "In particular the combination of an inexpensive service and German legal security represents a unique selling point right now," he said.
Initially, Open Telekom Cloud customers will be able to book IT infrastructure via a central portal, with the resources becoming available very quickly. However, the number of services available via the open cloud offering will grow over time, Deutsche Telekom said.
Its first partner is German software company SAP.
"We look forward to extending the value of our solutions through Deutsche Telekom’s public cloud platform," said Bernd Leukert, SAP board member for products and innovation.
