Sri Lankan operator says new leader will take over on 1 January 2017.

Dialog Axiata on Tuesday named company insider Supun Weerasinghe as its new chief executive, effective from the start of next year.

The Sri Lankan operator said Weerasinghe, who currently serves as managing director and chief executive of sister company Robi Axiata in Bangladesh, will join the Dialog leadership team in the fourth quarter of the year with a view to taking over the top job on 1 January 2017.

Weerasinghe has been with Dialog since 1999 and has held a number of senior positions in the intervening years.

Prior to taking on his current post in Bangladesh in 2014, he served as chief strategy officer of parent company Axiata Group. He also spent three years as chief operating officer of Dialog.

He will replace Hans Wijayasuriya, who took on a different role within the company earlier this year, becoming regional CEO for South Asia at Axiata Group. In his new position he oversees the group’s operations and investment interests in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka, and will retain his seat on the Dialog Axiata board, the company said, in a stock exchange announcement.

The executive changes form part of an ongoing succession programme at Axiata Group.
