Swedish kit maker shows off massive, multi-user MIMO radio equipment.

Ericsson claimed a world first on Wednesday by declaring that its 5G new radio (NR) equipment will be commercially deployed in 2017.

The Swedish kit maker unveiled its AIR 6468 radio, which supports massive MIMO, multi-user MIMO, and beamforming, delivering the capacity and coverage upgrade promised by 5G.

Ericsson said that when AIR 6468 is deployed alongside its network plug-ins – which were unveiled in June and are designed to enable current-generation network infrastructure to support 5G use cases – and its 5216 baseband system, a telco will have all the components it needs for a 5G access network.

"Ericsson has driven innovation in every generation of mobile technology and now we are set to over-deliver on an aggressive promise," said Arun Bansal, head of Ericsson’s network products business unit, in a statement.

Ericsson also introduced three new radios that support gigabit LTE and upcoming 5G technology. Radio 4407 and Radio 4412 enable 4×4 MIMO for FDD and TDD modes respectively, while Radio 8808 supports advanced beamforming.

The vendor also unveiled Radio 2205, which introduces support for unlicensed spectrum.

In addition, Ericsson launched a slew of new baseband units designed to mitigate interference; support cell densification in both macro and micro rollout scenarios; and enable cloud RAN deployments.
