Huawei on Tuesday announced that third-quarter smartphone shipments surged 63% year-on-year, driven by particularly strong growth in China and Europe.

The Chinese kit maker shipped 27.4 million smartphones in the three months to 30 September, compared to 16.8 million a year earlier.

Sales of Huawei’s mid-to-high-end smartphones, which carry a price tag of 2,000 yuan (€285) or more, accounted for 33% of the total. Indeed, sales of the Huawei Mate 7, P7, and P8 smartphones have reached 6.5 million, 7.5 million and 4 million units respectively since their launches. The Mate 7 launched in September 2014, the P7 in May 2014, and the P8 was launched in April this year.

"This quarter’s results clearly showcase the continued success of our growth strategy," said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group. "We are especially proud of the stellar growth we’ve seen outside of China and the increased demand for our mid-to-high end devices."

Huawei saw shipments in Europe and the Middle East and Africa climb 98% and 70% respectively year-on-year, while shipments in China jumped 81%.

"At this rate, we are confident in our ability to reach our smartphone shipment target of 100 million units by year’s end," Yu said.
