As Mobile World congress drew to a close, one booth remained exceptionally busy. For the first time, Huawei invited all Mobile World Congress delegates to visit its usually exclusive stand in Hall 1, giving visitors a glimpse of the future and a ubiquitously connected world.
Usually reserved for invited partners and customers, Huawei reinforced its commitment to openness in the mobile industry on the final day of MWC 2016, sharing its vision of the better connected world.
The technologies needed to achieve this were also on display, with Huawei’s main focuses including business transformation, network transformation, operation transformation and architecture transformation. Innovative solutions for 4.5G, Internet of Things (IoT), 2K/4K video and Safe City were just a few of the ways Huawei highlighted in the road to achieving this transformation.
Within 30 minutes starting from 9am today, approximately 100 people had visited the Huawei exhibition halls. By 1pm, about 800 people had visited. Those visiting the booth were left in no doubt that the journey towards the ultimate digital world had already begun.
Software drives the network
Chris Nicoll, Practice Head, Networks and M2M/IoT at Analysys Mason was among those taking in the technology and digital strategies on display. He said the open day would show delegates the company’s position in the industry.
“Huawei has emerged as one of the global leaders in telecoms,” he said. “Where I think they excel is providing focus on where their solutions fit in to specific markets such as IoT, expanded LTE technologies and small cells. In regards to what separates Huawei from its competitors and has established it as an industry leader, I think it has a very strong position and vision for ultra-broadband and the move to digital strategies, particularly the move to a virtualised architecture and in understanding and recognising that software is driving the network.”
According to Huawei forecasts, by 2025 there will be four billion new broadband users, more than 100 billion things will be digitally connected and every person’s consumption of data will increase more than 500-fold.
One of the main technologies which Huawei believes will make all of this possible is its 4.5G solution, which was also showcased at the booth. With Gbps speed and capacity to support 10 times more connections compared to 4G networks, 4.5G facilitates carriers’ transformation by enabling enriched services
Collaboration is key
In addition to the technologies, Huawei also believes openness and collaboration is key for operators to thrive. According to the company, partnering with players in different industries will lead to greater contributions to the industry and empower carriers to lead the value chain.
It is this philosophy which is behind the open day at the Huawei booth. The company sees the ICT industry as a key enabler in the ICT industry and is committed to helping the telecom industry and vertical industries digitalize their infrastructure, operational systems and business models with state-of-the-art technology. But Huawei also believes more than just technology is needed in order to realise this vision, identifying collaboration as the key direction for the industry. With that collaboration, it wants to drive value creation, foster innovation and enhance user experiences. As such, Huawei is committed to pursuing further cooperation with both existing partners and new ones and the open day is part of its efforts to aim for shared success.
ICT is the enabler
The open day rounded off a packed show for Huawei, with the overriding theme being that ICT and an open ecosystem is very much the enabler of all of the initiatives the industry is trying to realise.
While transformation of operations and providing video services is just a small part of challenge that lies ahead for operators, they are certainly good places to start. There is still a long way to go before we reach the ultimate digital world with ubiquitous connectivity and perfect user experience but with the solutions and business models Huawei was showing off at its booth, visitors were left with the overwhelming feeling that the journey there has well and truly begun.
