Companies target industrial, manufacturing, smart cities sectors.

Nokia and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) this week agreed to collaborate on IoT solutions for enterprises.

In a statement on Wednesday, the two companies said they plan to target the industrial/manufacturing and smart cities sectors. The joint offerings will combine connectivity, core networking, data aggregation, and compute technologies.

The companies are currently developing a proof-of-concept for smart cities that combines Nokia’s routing equipment with HPE’s hybrid IT capabilities.

"HPE’s market presence offers Nokia expedited and increased access to the enterprise market and target verticals along with a complimentary portfolio of products and services," said Kathrin Buvac, Nokia’s chief strategy officer.

Citing figures from research firm Markets and Markets, Nokia said the IoT market for smart cities and manufacturing will be worth $161 billion (€152 billion) by 2020, driven by the desire by manufacturers and local administrators to improve productivity and operational efficiency.

"The addition of Nokia to the HPE IoT partner ecosystem will bring broader choice and market-leading technologies to our joint customers. HPE and Nokia have a long history of innovation that will help our customers through their journey of digitisation," said Antonio Neri, EVP and head of HPE’s enterprise group.

The joint solutions are due to be made available from early 2017.
