Nokia Networks on Friday announced that it has signed a contract worth US$1 billion (€930 million) with China Mobile for mobile equipment and services, including TD-LTE kit.

The deal was formally inked on Thursday, but Nokia has been delivering equipment under the terms of the agreement since the first quarter of this year and will continue to do so into 2016.

Earlier this month Nokia claimed to be the largest non-Chinese vendor involved in China Mobile’s 1 million 4G base stations project, although at the time it did not give an indication as to the value of its contract with the telco.

China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator, plans to deploy the 1 million TD-LTE base stations by the end of the year.

Nokia said it is providing TD-LTE-Advanced technology and 2G, 3G and 4G core network solutions, including voice over LTE (VoLTE), and network planning, implementation and care services.

It will also help China Mobile provide the network connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, and the pair have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see them cooperate on the development of 5G technology.

"Our agreement will further accelerate TD-LTE development in China and around the world," said Mike Wang, president of Greater China at Nokia Networks.

"In addition, we are also helping China Mobile to support and promote the use of innovative IoT applications for areas as diverse as healthcare and connected cars," Wang said.
