Pilot project sees 4,000 subscribers transferred to unified IP network.

Orange Poland and Nokia revealed on Wednesday they have completed a pilot project that paves the way for the mass migration of subscribers to an all-IP network.

The pilot saw 4,000 customers in a suburban area of Warsaw transferred from Orange’s legacy PSTN to an all-IP network, enabling the telco to offer voice and data services from unified core and access network platforms.

Nokia said the migration will also enable Orange to reduce energy consumption and optimise its real estate assets.

"Implementation of the all-IP programme supports Orange Poland’s ambition to retain leadership in the digital economy and ultra-broadband innovations in Poland, and will streamline our network and services operations to deliver simplification and optimised costs to better serve our customers," said Rafal Dziedzic, director of technology and operations strategy at Orange Poland, in a statement.

For the pilot, Orange tapped Nokia’s PSTN Smart Transform professional services and its Network Migration Operating Centre in Poland.

"Migrating away from traditional PSTN networks is a process that can be extremely difficult, complex and expensive without the right expertise," said Federico Guillen, president of Nokia’s fixed networks division. "At Nokia, we deliver a set of transformation services based on fully automated processes and tools to ensure a smooth migration, avoiding costly errors and ensuring zero user impact."
