T-Mobile US typically performs much better in metro areas compared to state or national levels, however.
The latest RootMetrics report for the U.S. market revealed that Verizon is still leading the way when it comes to mobile network performance at the national level.
The report for the first half of 2016 awarded Verizon first place in every aspect of RootMetrics mobile network performance testing. AT&T was ranked second, followed by Sprint in third position and T-Mobile US in fourth place.
However, the report noted that T-Mobile US continued to make gains in data performance and network speed, taking a close third place in each category. As well as within the different categories, the overall report also masks better performances at smaller, more regional levels.
Indeed, RootMetrics noted that T-Mobile US typically performs much better in metro areas compared to state or national levels, and that was again the case in the first half of 2016.
Julie Dey, VP of RootMetrics, said it’s now no longer enough to just get a signal; how smartphones perform on the different networks is now also a crucial factor.
“As a result, competition between the networks continues to intensify, with the different carriers expanding their LTE footprints and implementing new technologies to provide the best possible mobile experience for consumers across the nation,” Dey said.
In order to carry out its performance tests, RootMetrics staff members drove over 265,000 miles while testing performance on highways and in big cities, small towns, and rural areas across the U.S.
One thing is for sure: providing strong service across the entirety of the U.S. is a tall order.
“To earn our United States RootScore Awards, a network needs to offer outstanding performance across all of the different spaces where consumers use their smartphones, from cities and towns of all sizes to highways, rural areas, and all the places in between,” the company said.
