Korean electronics maker steps up patent dispute with Chinese rival, demands 21.8 million.

Samsung has filed a lawsuit suit against Huawei, accusing it of infringing six of its patents, it emerged on Friday.

The Korean electronics giant sued its Chinese rival in a Beijing court about two weeks ago, Reuters reported. The lawsuit relates specifically to Huawei’s Mate 8 smartphone and Honor devices.

According to a local intellectual property court cited by the newswire, Samsung has demanded Huawei stop production of the infringing devices and pay damages totalling 161 million yuan (€21.8 million).

"Despite our best efforts to resolve this matter amicably, it has regrettably become necessary to take legal action in order to defend our intellectual property," said Samsung, in the report.

Huawei said it would defend itself, telling Reuters that in the absence of a settlement, litigation is an efficient way of resolving patent disputes.

Indeed, Huawei in May hit Samsung with a patent suit of its own, claiming that the latter is using Huawei’s patented cellular technology without a licence.

No fewer than 11 Samsung devices are guilty of infringement, Huawei claimed, including its flagship Galaxy S7 Edge.

Samsung at the time warned that it planned to countersue; it appears to have now carried out its threat.
