In the early days of 5G, the improvements to mobile and broadband services beyond increased speed and latency were limited, and so the difference from 4G was small, which made it hard to market to consumer.

What primarily underpins 5G monetisation is pricing upsell – if operators want the consumers to pay more, they must offer more. That could be more data, faster speed or lower latency, for the operator to monetise the consumer more than they are able to for 4G.

Altice to sell control of data centre business 

French telecoms company Altice has entered into an exclusivity agreement to partner with Morgan Stanley. As part of the deal, Altice France is set to sell a 70% share if its data centre business to Morgan Stanley for €535 million, which will create a new venture named UltraEdge, which will operate 257 data centre and office space across France.  

BT in early talks to buy musicMagpie 

musicMagpie announced this week that it has entered into initial talks with BT and investment group Aurelius regarding its sale. 

The online retailer of used electronics (smartphones, tablets etc), noted that discussions are at a “very early stage” although offer discussions are ongoing.

The Netherlands lines up private 5G spectrum licences

The RDI is preparing to make local, private 5G spectrum licences in the 3.5GHz band available to enterprise customers before the end of the year.

Two 50MHz blocks in the 3.5GHz band (more specifically, 3,400–3,450MHz and 3,750–3,800MHz) are being set aside for enterprise use, with the RDI saying that companies can apply individually or in partnership to gain access to the spectrum.

Vocus and TPG end $4.2 billion fibre talks 

Australia’s TPG Telecom has ended talks with Vocus Group for the sale of its non-mobile fibre assets for AU$6.3 billion ($4.2 billion). 

In August, Vocus Group made a non-binding offer of AU $6.3 billion ($4.2 billion) to buy rival TPG Telecom’s enterprise, government, and wholesale network assets, which included their wholesale broadband business, Vision Network.  

Boldyn Networks snaps up Cellnex’s private networks business unit 

Cellnex and Boldyn Networks have reached an agreement, in which Boldyn will acquire Cellnex’s private networks business unit. 

The acquisition will primarily consist of a Finish company Edzcom, who design, build and operate private 4G and 5G networks on behalf of other companies. The company works in the oil and gas, mining, energy, ports and manufacturing sectors within multiple European markets. Cellnex itself only acquired Edzcom in 2020. 

Qualcomm ends satellite partnership with Iridium 

Qualcomm and Iridium Communications have ended a deal that was set to provide satellite communication services to mobile phones. 

The partnership, which was confirmed in January, had planned to enable satellite messaging and emergency services in smartphones powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile Platforms, which would be delivered through Iridium’s satellite constellation.
