Swedish kit maker’s online video platform to deliver linear, on-demand content for KNIPPR.
Ericsson on Wednesday revealed that T-Mobile Netherlands is using its online video platform and related services as the basis for its over-the-top (OTT) TV service KNIPPR.
Launched last month KNIPPR is available through a browser-based video player or as a smartphone or tablet app. It is also compatible with Google Chromecast and Apple TV.
What makes KNIPPR slightly different from other TV services is that customers can build their own package of channels on top of the basic service, rather than being given a choice of bundles of channels to pick from.
"People are no longer stuck with the expensive combination packages containing large channel packages with dozens of channels people never watch, but do pay for. KNIPPR offers ultimate freedom of choice," explained Johan Trouwborst, vice president of KNIPPR at T-Mobile Netherlands, in a statement.
"The way audiences watch content has changed dramatically and it is now more important than ever before to ensure that content is easily available anytime, anywhere and on any device," added Thorsten Sauer, head of broadcast and media services at Ericsson.
Ericsson is responsible for delivering linear as well as on-demand TV channels, and providing digital rights management and content delivery networks (CDNs). The Swedish kit maker is also providing metadata services to enrich KNIPPR’s electronic programme guide (EPG).
"Our managed service takes away the complexities and challenges of deploying Internet-delivered catch-up and online TV services to every connected device, and lets our customers focus on the core of their businesses – quality content and a great consumer experience," Sauer said.
