Sweden-based operator aims to deploy virtual evolved packet core by third quarter.

Tele2 on Wednesday kicked off its network functions virtualisation (NFV) strategy, announcing plans to have a virtual evolved packet core (vEPC) up and running by the third quarter.

The Sweden-based operator said NFV will enable it to offer a broader range of services in the enterprise, consumer and IoT markets. It will also enhance its big data and advanced analytics capabilities.

"This is an important step for Tele2 in further strengthening our position as a technology frontrunner," said Niklas Sonkin, chief operating officer of Tele2, who added that cloud and virtualisation are "important building blocks" for 5G.

Tele2 has chosen software maker Canonical’s BootStack cloud management platform, which is based on OpenStack’s open source cloud computing software. Canonical will also supply its Juju service-modelling tool, which enables the likes of Tele2 to configure, manage, and deploy new cloud-based services.

Tele2 has also selected Cisco’s Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) for its software-defined networking (SDN) architecture, and Huawei’s rack mount servers.

Deploying NFV will enable "a smarter, user-friendly, future-proof and even more cost efficient internal management," Tele2 said.
