Newcomer tasked with growing telco’s customer base, overseeing network expansion.
Tele2 Russia has appointed Sergei Emdin as its new chief executive officer.
Emdin takes over from Mikhail Noskov, who spent less tan two years in the role.
Noskov is leaving the company to work on projects that are not related to the VTB Group, Tele2 Russia’s parent company, the telco’s chairman Yuri Soloviev said in a statement on Friday.
Emdin will be tasked with the responsibility of expanding Tele2’s customer base in Russia and overseeing the expansion of its network infrastructure, Soloviev said.
Tele2 is looking to establish itself as an integrated service provider and is keen to foster rapid growth in the data products space, the company added.
Emdin joins Tele2 from Northern Capital Gateway LLC, the company that operates St Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport. It counts VTB amongst its investors.
Sweden’s Tele2 group pulled out of Russia in 2014 but its former mobile unit there still uses its brand. Tele2 Russia merged its assets with those of fixed-line provider Rostelecom to create a converged operator; Rostelecom owns 45% of the company and VTB Group plus strategic investors hold the other 55%.
Tele2 launched mobile services in Moscow in October last year and aims to build its customer base there by offering low-cost tariff plans.
According to the latest figures from specialist consultancy Advanced Communications & Media (AC&M), Tele2 had a 14% share of Russia’s mobile market at the end of September, despite having no real presence in Moscow at that time.
Its customer base in the country stood at 35.5 million at the same date, the firm said.
