TeliaSonera has appointed the CEO of its Danish arm Sören Abildgaard to head up its newly-combined commercial and technology division.

The move will see him join the Sweden-based telco’s group executive management team and assume the role of chief commercial officer as well.

"The combined group commercial and group technology unit is critical for us to succeed with commercial excellence, technology leadership and our transformation programme. We have a strong team and I am really happy to see talented colleagues stepping up", said Johan Dennelind, CEO of TeliaSonera, in a statement on Thursday.

The new operational structure will be effective from 1 January 2016.

TeliaSonera announced last week that it was combining its commercial and technology groups, a move that saw company veteran and technology SVP Malin Frenning leave the company after more than 20 years.

Frenning "has been instrumental in turning the company into one of Europe’s leading operators. I really want to thank Malin for all her great work and achievements and wish her all the best going forward," said Dennelind last week.

Meanwhile, Morten Bentzen, head of enterprise at Telia Denmark, has been promoted to CEO of the operation.

The changes stem from TeliaSonera’s decision in September to exit its Eurasia operations – the part of the business that has weighed on results and dragged the telco into several corruption investigations – and focus instead on its Swedish and European businesses.
