Sweden-based telco to decide at April AGM whether to drop ‘Sonera’ half of its name.
TeliaSonera on Monday proposed changing its name to ‘Telia Company’ in order to signify its change into what it calls a new generation telco.
"We want to build the new digital society and empower people, companies and societies to stay in touch with everything that matters to them. Now we’re about to take the next step," said TeliaSonera CEO Johan Dennelind, in a statement.
TeliaSonera is also in the process of selling its operations in Eurasia, reducing its footprint considerably. Of its seven remaining businesses, four of them already use the Telia name, the telco said.
TeliaSonera came into its current form in 2002, when Sweden’s Telia merged with Finland’s Sonera.
The proposed name change will be decided at TeliaSonera’s next annual general meeting, which takes place on 12 April.
"We are a new company, with a positive outlook of the future that we help create for our customers," Dennelind said. "The new proposed name, Telia Company, signifies and visualises this through our local brands who have already started to be refreshed."
