Millicom unit plans to cover all major cities with 4G before the end of this year.

Millicom’s mobile operation in Tanzania on Thursday announced plans to spend more than US$75 million on the expansion of its mobile network this year by increasing the number of 3G and 4G sites, expanding its fibre network and boosting the number of customer service outlets across the country.

The telco, which operates under the Tigo brand, said the 4G network was launched in Dar Es Salaam in April 2015 and has now been expanded to Arusha, Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Moshi, Mwanza, Tabora, Musoma, Bukoba, Kigoma and Shinyanga. The plan is to cover all major cities with 4G before the end of this year, while also increasing 3G coverage countrywide and optimising the 2G network.

Tigo General Manager, Diego Gutierrez said: “The expansion of 4G technology to all corners of the country is in line with our commitment to provide our customers with world class services that enable them to enjoy a fully digital lifestyle.”

Gutierrez added that Tigo is also committed to increasing access to the Internet to as many Tanzanians as possible.

Millicom is now the second-largest mobile operator in Tanzania by subscribers after it acquired Zantel last year. At the time Zantel and Tigo unit claimed 34.2% share of the market, putting them ahead of Airtel, which had 30.1%. Vodacom was market leader with a 35.2% share.
