U.S. telco taps Big Switch, Dell, Red Hat for what it claims is industry’s biggest OpenStack deployment.
Verizon on Monday laid claim to the industry’s largest OpenStack network functions virtualisation (NFV) rollout, having completed the deployment across five of its U.S. data centres.
The telco tapped software-defined networking (SDN) specialist Big Switch Networks, open source software provider Red Hat, and hardware maker Dell to develop a pod-based architecture for its NFV infrastructure, which is designed to be easier to deploy and maintain at scale.
"This NFV project is another step in building Verizon’s next-generation network – with implications for the industry," said Adam Koeppe, vice president of network technology planning at Verizon, in a statement.
"New and emerging applications are highlighting the need for collaborative research and development in technologies like NFV. We consider this achievement to be foundational for building the Verizon cloud that serves our customers’ needs anywhere, anytime, any app," he said.
Verizon said NFV deployments are currently underway at additional domestic data centre and aggregation sites. International locations will be added over the coming months.
