Prime minister reportedly targets 40% fixed broadband coverage by 2020.
Vietnam’s prime minister has approved a national broadband that aims to extend fixed broadband coverage to 40% of the population by 2020.
According to a Vietnam News report on Saturday, prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung wants 60% of those with broadband coverage to receive a minimum downlink speed of 25 Mbps. Under the plan, all public Internet access points will also be required to use a fixed broadband connection, with at least half wired up to a 50 Mbps service.
When it comes to mobile, Vietnam has set a target of providing downlink speeds of at least 4 Mbps in urban areas and 2 Mbps in rural areas.
The programme also aims to stimulate investment in infrastructure, as well as digital content and IT in a bid to facilitate the development of e-government, e-commerce and disaster recovery services, among others.
In addition Vietnam’s broadband plan wants to promote healthy competition by ensuring there is no discrimination between state-run and privately-owned companies.
