Mobile operator implements network-level call-blocking technology.
Vodafone UK on Tuesday rolled out network-level call-blocking aimed at reducing the volume of nuisance calls to end users.
Until now, Vodafone has been able to stop customers from unwittingly returning calls to fraudulent numbers but has not been able to prevent them receiving scam calls in the first place. Its new technology prevents nuisance calls – such as fake competitions and missed-call scams – from entering its network at all.
"Fraudulent calls are a scourge on society, inflicting great anxiety for victims. The protection of our customers is paramount and we have been investing heavily in our network and technology to help stamp out this practice," said Mark Hughes, head of corporate security at Vodafone UK, in a statement.
During a test of the new system, Vodafone said it blocked more than 425,000 scam calls in a single day. As the test progressed over the course of a week, the volume of calls declined as those responsible realised their attempts were unsuccessful.
In addition to network-level call-blocking, Vodafone UK also runs a nuisance call bureau to help customers block unsolicited or threatening phone calls.
"We will continue to evolve the technology as well as work with industry bodies and the regulator to ensure we stay one step ahead of criminals," Hughes said.
