Joint venture adopts HTML 5, cloud technology in bid to make TV experience more slick.

YouView on Wednesday unveiled its upgraded TV service, which uses HTML 5 and cloud technology to make for a slicker user experience.

The new, image-led interface is designed to be quicker to navigate to live channels, catch-up TV, or on-demand content.

Some of YouView’s functionality has been migrated from the set-top-box (STB) to the cloud, making it easier for the company to roll out system updates. The new version of YouView also gathers more user data, giving it greater insight into viewing habits.

"This is just the beginning of a whole new chapter for YouView and for our shareholders, content partners, their advertisers and our viewers," said Richard Halton, CEO of YouView, which is a joint venture between BT, TalkTalk, and the U.K.’s public service broadcasters.

Impressively, there is no minimum specification for the new version of YouView: anyone who bought a YouView TV or STB since its launch in 2012 will receive the upgrade.

"By the time this rollout is completed, every YouView box will feel like a whole new product," Halton said.

YouView will start upgrading customers over the coming months. As part of the overhaul, the company will also adopt a new logo and Website.
