Troubled Taiwanese smartphone maker’s co-founder is now chairman of visual effects company.

HTC this week confirmed that former CEO Peter Chou has left the company he co-founded nearly 20 years ago.

Chou had been in charge of future product innovation at the Taiwanese device maker after handing over the CEO role to fellow co-founder Cher Wang in March 2015.

"HTC can confirm that Peter Chou retired from the company after assuming the chairmanship of Digital Domain in September 2015, although he was retained as an advisor to enable HTC to leverage his extensive experience," said HTC in an emailed statement on Wednesday.

Digital Domain is a visual effects company based in the U.S.

"We thank Peter for his long-term commitment to the business and wish him well in his retirement," HTC said.

Confirmation of Chou’s departure comes as HTC struggles to find a way forward in the smartphone market.

In the first quarter of 2016, the company’s revenue plunged to NT$14.82 billion (€409.52 million) from NT$41.52 billion in the same period a year earlier.

HTC swung to an operating loss of NT$4.8 billion from a year-ago operating profit of NT$20.47 million, and a net loss of NT$2.62 billion from a net profit of NT$360.06 million.
