Telecom Italia unit acquires 76 mobile sites in Lombardy via purchase of three companies.

Telecom Italia’s mobile towers business has boosted its portfolio with the acquisition of new sites in Lombardy, it announced on Monday.

The news comes as rumours over the sale of a further stake in the company intensify; three groups are reportedly in line to buy into Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane (INWIT), and it seems Telecom Italia is looking to complete the deal in the first half of this year.

INWIT has closed the purchase of 76 mobile sites in Lombardy, mainly in the province of Brescia, through the acquisition of three companies: Gestione Due, Gestione Immobili, and Revi Immobili.

The purchase price was €7.9 million.

"The transaction…comes as part of the strategy for the continuous improvement of profitability and the consolidation of the market leadership pursued by INWIT in Italy," the towers firm said, in a statement.

Telecom Italia floated 40% of INWIT last summer and is now in the process of selling a further stake in the business to a strategic investor.

Late last year Italian newspaper La Stampa reported that three groups had submitted non-binding bids by Telecom Italia’s 18 December deadline.

It cited unnamed Dow Jones sources as saying a consortium of Cellnex and F2i is leading the way, followed by American Tower and Ei Towers.

In its hard copy edition on Sunday, La Stampa repeated those names, according to information shared by Italy’s TV Zoom, and said that a deal is likely to close by June.
