Major telecoms operators will in future make the decision to separate their network operations from the retail side of the business, or so one analyst believes.

"We will see some huge changes," John Strand, chief executive of Strand Consult, predicted at Carriers World on Tuesday.

Certain telcos, "will be split into two," he said, suggesting that big names like Verizon could adopt such a strategy.

"It will work in certain countries," Strand said, reminding the audience that some markets are already making moves in that direction. Mexico, for example, is working on the deployment of a national shared mobile network.

"A national carriers’ carrier could make a lot of sense," Strand said. "The flavour exists already today…and we will see more varieties in the future."

He stopped short of a prediction on when such moves, including the separation of telco operations, are likely to happen, but waxed lyrical on the potential benefits.

It could make it easier for telcos to partner with other players to bring innovative services to market, as well as making life easier for governments, with regard to the payments of subsidies and so on.

In addition, it would provide "more transparency for the investors," Strand said.

"In many countries it will make sense," he insisted.
