Ooredoo’s customer base topped 100 million in the fourth quarter of 2014, driven by growth in Algeria, Oman, Myanmar and its home market of Qatar.
By comparison, the telco served approximately 95 million customers at the end of 2013. Only a decade ago, Ooredoo’s customer base stood at less than a million.
"Reaching this milestone of 100 million customers reminds us how far we have travelled over the past decade, and reinforces the incredible impact that Ooredoo services are having around the world," said Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, chairman of Ooredoo, in a statement late last week.
With an operating footprint spanning the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia, Ooredoo said it has an addressable market of more than 700 million people, giving it plenty of headroom.
The most recent addition to the company’s footprint, Myanmar, has a population of around 53 million people but a mobile penetration rate of approximately 27%. Ooredoo officially went live in the country in mid-August 2014 and before the end of the month claimed more than 1 million customers.
In Algeria, Ooredoo’s 3G customer base topped 3.5 million at the end of December, approximately a year after it launched services there. Meanwhile in its home market of Qatar, it boasts more than 3 million mobile connections, this in a country with a population of less than 3 million.
The company is due to publish its latest full-year results on Tuesday.
